Position: Co-Founder and Managing Director, European Championships
Paul Bristow is the Co-Founder and MD of European Championships Management Sárl, the company behind the multisport European Championships.
The European Championships brings together the existing Championships of a limited number of major sports once every 4 years under a common brand identity with a co-ordinated Host City and commercial rights approach to deliver “a must watch, must attend event that elevates the Champions of Europe”.
The concept delivers on the promise that “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts” and that aggregation is key to navigating an increasingly fragmented world of sports events.
The first edition was held in Glasgow and Berlin in 2018 with 7 sports and the second edition was held in Munich in August 2022 with 9 sports: Athletics (European Athletics), Beach Volleyball (CEV), Cycling (UEC), Gymnastics (EG), Rowing (FISA), Sport Climbing (IFSC), Sprint Canoe (ECA), Table Tennis (ETTU) and Triathlon (ETU).
Through its media partner, the European Broadcasting Union, each event provided over 10 hours a day of programming for 10 days for the public service media channels, such as BBC, ARD/ZDF, France TV, RAI and TVE. It delivered over 750 million TV viewer hours and audience ratings well above the normal channel averages.
At a cost of about 1% of the budget for a summer Olympic Games, the event also delivered an exceptional social and economic return on investment for Host Cities.
Paul has over 35 years experience in the international sports industry including senior leadership roles at Deltatre (a leading global sports media technology company), TEAM Marketing (global agency for the UEFA Champions League) and World Athletics.
