Position: Chief Executive, Coventry City Council
Martin has been Chief Executive of Coventry City Council since April 2009. He was Chief Executive of the West Midlands Combined Authority from March 2016 to September 2017. He is a trustee of the Coventry City of Culture Trust and was a key figure in Coventry’s successful bid for the UK City of Culture 2021 title.
He is also on the board of the Centre for Cities. He is a Governor on the Board at Coventry University and is the first Honorary President of LARIA (Local Authorities Research and Intelligence Association). He was the President of SOLACE (Society of Local Authority Chief Executives) in 2013 and is their Spokesperson for Local Government finance and future funding. In 2018 Martin was again included in the Local Government Chronicle’s top 50 list of influential people.
Previously Martin was Chief Executive of Bedfordshire County Council, and Head of Performance Improvement at Westminster City Council. He spent much of his early career as a lecturer and researcher and has a PhD in applied economics.
